Mami's backstory with her parents controlling every aspect of her life and that forced breakup just hits differently. You finally see why she acts the way she does.

I couldn't believe Mami asked Chizuru if Kazuya was her boyfriend or just a rental. That was a bold move.

Chizuru refusing to immediately spill everything to Mami was a big step for her. You can tell she's thinking for herself now.

The conversation between Mami and Chizuru at the hotel was intense. You could cut the tension with a knife.

When Mami told Chizuru she just wants to destroy happy couples, I got chills. It’s a dark path for her.

Seeing Mami's dad slap her and her just screaming broke me. No wonder she's so messed up. You can really feel her pain there.

The whole scene with Mami's childhood and her first love was so sad. I never thought I'd feel bad for her but here we are.

This episode hit me hard. I never thought I'd feel anything but annoyance for Mami, but seeing her childhood and what her parents did to her, throwing away her beloved toys and basically forcing her into a pre-arranged marriage just explains *so much*. It doesn't excuse everything she does, but it makes her behavior understandable, like a messed-up coping mechanism. My heart genuinely ached for little Mami, trapped by her family's expectations.

Mami's backstory made me actually feel bad for her, but it still doesn't excuse everything she's done. That forced breakup hit hard.

I really thought this episode was going to be a total Mami villain origin story, but it ended up making her more complex than I expected. Her parents are just awful

Mami best girl! She's the most interesting character in the series in my opinion, and keeps the story alive for a majority of its plot points. Her character is a little hard to understand, but we get to see her POV during her flashback, which was quite inquisitive.

Honestly I do not get the hype around this series, it was OK at best. Many things happen in this episode, but it seems like they're setting up some side romance with Ruka. Although that just comes off as a really hard watch for both characters.

I really don't get the point of the whole conflict with Mami if they're just gonna resolve it like that; it was literally the ONLY thing that happened within the plot for like 3 seasons. Now it's just gone and was just for the cliffhanger..

EPISODE CONTEXT

This season premiere picks up directly in the aftermath of Season 4's pressure-cooker confrontation, where Mami forced Chizuru toward a moment of painful honesty about her arrangement with Kazuya. By dedicating its opening episode to Mami's backstory and motivations, Season 5 signals a shift toward deeper character reckoning rather than status-quo romantic comedy. It lays essential groundwork for the Mami-Chizuru conflict that is poised to drive the season's central tension forward.
