This is not a show for everyone. It's slow, grim, and violent. The animation is rough. But there's something about it that's really compelling. The classic detective format is unique for anime, and Heizo is a genuinely interesting character.Heizo releases Kumehachi and sends him to find the real Tanbei . When Kumehachi finds him, it's heartbreaking.

The first episode had a dark, gritty atmosphere that pulled me in right away. It took its time setting everything up, but the mystery kept me interested the whole way through. I liked how it slowly built the tension, and the little moment at the end was a nice touch. I'd definitely recommend giving it a watch if you're into slower-paced crime dramas.

Onihei is not for everyone. At first, it seems like your historical period piece drama in medieval Japan, but that is just the background dressing for serious discussions about the nature of justice. It is not flashy nor constantly exciting. Yet it shows why anime can be art

EPISODE CONTEXT

As the series premiere of a 13-episode season, this episode carries the full weight of world-building and character introduction, establishing Heizo Hasegawa's authority and the moral gray zones that define his work. It sets the episodic structure the season will follow — individual cases that each probe different facets of crime, justice, and honor in Edo. The groundwork laid here, particularly the dynamic between law enforcement and the criminal underworld, becomes the connective tissue for every story that follows.
