Marco looks so different in his glasses, but his devotion to Whitebeard's memento is exactly what you would expect from the first mate

It is wild that Whitebeard was just a kid on an abandoned island, no wonder he wanted a crew that felt like a real home

I really respect Marco for staying behind to protect that village from Weevil and seeing those phoenix flames in a peaceful setting was great

Another episode where they spend way too much time on flashbacks and it feels like we are never going to actually get to the start of Wano

I can't get over Whitebeard sending all his money home to that little village and it makes his whole obsession with family finally make sense to me

Blackbeard having two powers at once is still so creepy and thinking about what he actually did to get them from people is nightmare fuel
zangetsu_zen's avatar

The way they explained why Whitebeard had to build his own family because he grew up an orphan on such a lawless island hit pretty hard

Seeing Marco acting as a doctor for those villagers was really touching and it shows how much he still cares about his old captain

Marco confirming that Miss Buckin was actually on Whitebeard's ship threw me for a loop, totally complicating the whole Weevil situation. Now I'm seriously wondering if he truly is Whitebeard's son, and what that could even mean for the New World.

I actually teared up a bit when Marco explained how Whitebeard used his share of the loot to buy supplies for the Sphinx villagers because he knew they had nothing. It makes his death at Marineford hurt even more knowing he was their only protector, and now Marco is just carrying that torch while Weevil is out there wrecking things

Knowing Blackbeard is out there hunting for fruits while Marco is just healing people in a hidden village is such a crazy contrast for two former crewmates

Waiting for Wano to start is a struggle but seeing Marco use his powers as a village doctor was a really peaceful way to spend twenty minutes before the big arc

Whitebeard's village on Sphinx, so unbelievably simple, makes me understand his whole "family" thing on a deeper level now; he wasn't just an emperor but the protector of a truly defenseless home, which explains every penny he never had. It makes my heart ache a bit for Marco, having to hold the fort against Weevil and his mom, carrying that heavy responsibility for his captain's legacy.

The flashbacks felt a bit long, but learning that Whitebeard grew up as an orphan in such a lawless place explains why he wanted a family so badly

I hope the new art style stays this good for the rest of the arc, since those final shots of the ocean looked so crisp and vibrant

I honestly felt so bad for Marco having to deal with the aftermath of the Payback War while just trying to keep his captain's tiny home village safe from people like Weevil

Marco being a doctor and healing that manticore really got to me and seeing Whitebeard's humble village makes his whole father figure persona feel even more real than before

Anyone calling this episode filler is missing the point because finding out Whitebeard was just a poor kid from a non-affiliated island adds so much weight to his character

The crew finally reaching the coast of Wano is such a massive moment and it makes the fight with Kaido feel like it is actually starting

Marco refusing to leave the village because of Weevil makes perfect sense and he is still the best first mate for protecting Whitebeards only real treasure

EPISODE CONTEXT

Episode 890 functions as a critical narrative bridge between the politically charged Reverie arc and the massive Wano Country arc that follows. The previous episode wrapped up the Reverie's world-stage discussions, and this installment pivots to ground-level storytelling by catching up with Marco and establishing his circumstances—context that becomes directly relevant as the Wano saga unfolds. It's a deliberate transition point, seeding character threads that will pay off in the episodes ahead.
