Linlin trying to help the longarm tribe kid and the giants by treating them like dolls, even though she was clearly hurting them, was a hard scene to sit through

I felt so bad when Linlin got left on that beach by her parents and she just sat there waiting for them but they never came back

I really felt for the giants trying to be nice to her only for her to accidentally break everything they built in Elbaf

I still can't get over how she swiped that bear and it just died instantly because she thought she was being sweet

I can't believe how scary five year old Linlin is and the way she just destroyed Elbaf over some semla sweets was actually terrifying

The way the giants looked at her with pure fear after the village fire started really shows why she ended up so lonely

I actually liked getting this break from the Katakuri fight, because seeing Linlin as a weirdly buff toddler is hilarious and creepy at the same time and her parents just leaving her there on the shore was brutal, but Mother Carmel taking her in feels like there is some hidden catch that we haven't seen yet since nobody is that selfless in this world

I feel so bad for child Linlin because her parents just left her on that island alone

Dory and Brogy appearing in the flashback made me miss the Little Garden arc and the simple days before all this Yonko madness

The backstory is moving a bit slow, but seeing a five year old flip a giant was worth the wait

The scene with Linlin accidentally killing that bear while trying to be nice was heartbreaking, and it really shows how her life was doomed from the beginning

Mother Carmel seems way too nice for a show like this and it makes me suspicious about what she actually wants with all those kids

The semla feast ending was so unsettling because everybody just vanished and Linlin has no idea what happened to her friends or Mother Carmel

Big Mom's parents dumping her on that island was messed up because she was literally just a kid who didn't know her own strength yet
chopper_champion_38's avatar

Linlin crying for her mom and dad while they sailed away was the first time this show made me feel bad for an emperor
serena's avatar

Hajrudin popping up in the background of Elbaf made the whole world feel so much bigger and more connected than before

Poor Linlin, I felt so torn watching her innocent intentions completely backfire as she accidentally crushed those kids' bones. It really makes you wonder how someone with such raw, uncontrollable power could ever fit in, and my stomach churned seeing her confusion.

Linlin going crazy over those semla sweets and wrecking the giants village was intense and she has always been a monster from the start

Big Mom going absolutely nuclear and tearing through that giant village for a single semla made my blood run cold, and it just reinforced for me how her childhood hunger issues turned her into this terrifying force of nature, especially when she's denied.

The semla bread looked so incredibly tempting, I completely understood why little Big Mom went full monster after twelve whole days without it. My stomach was growling just watching her, and it made me feel a weird mix of horror for the villagers and twisted sympathy for her intense hunger.

EPISODE CONTEXT

Deep into the Whole Cake Island arc, Episode 836 arrives as a crucial flashback interlude after a stretch of intense confrontations and alliance-building among the Straw Hats. By peeling back Big Mom's origin story through her childhood on Elbaph and her connection to Mother Carmel, this episode recontextualizes her as more than just an obstacle — it grounds the arc's central villain in tragedy. The revelations seeded here directly inform the motivations and consequences that drive the remaining conflicts of the Whole Cake Island saga forward.
