My heart broke for Neji during that flashback because the Hyuga clan system is absolutely cruel to the branch members and he deserved better than that

Woah, that specific exchange during the fight, with how it mirrored the train scene from Bebop, seriously blew my mind; I was totally locked in. It felt like the animators pulled out all the stops for that sequence, and honestly, I rewinded it twice just to soak in how incredibly dynamic it was.

Neji getting hit after all that talk about his perfect defense and the Byakugan seeing everything felt so good because he was being such a bully to Hinata before

I really hated Neji for how he treated Hinata but seeing that bird brand on his forehead made me feel bad for him and Naruto getting back up was crazy

Kabuto is definitely up to something because he is just lurking in the background watching everyone and it is getting really creepy

Naruto yelling about changing destiny while his chakra points are all closed is classic for him and Neji looks so confused that his philosophy is failing

The red chakra leaking out of Naruto at the end was such a cool tease and you can tell Neji is starting to freak out about destiny being wrong

I actually felt so bad for Neji when he showed that mark on his forehead because the Hyuga family system is just messed up

That rotation jutsu looks like a literal cheat code but Naruto keeps using those shadow clones to find an opening anyway

That one sequence looked exactly like the Spike fight in the Bebop movie and it was so cool to see that level of animation in a weekly show

Neji is totally unstoppable with that rotation move and Naruto just keeps getting hit but he still wont stay down

The Hyuga clan putting a literal bird in a cage seal on their own family is messed up, and it explains why Neji is so obsessed with everyone having a fixed fate

I really hated how Neji treated his own family, but finding out about the bird in the cage mark made his anger feel a lot more justified.

Neji was right about the blind spot existing, but he never expected Naruto to literally crawl under his defense to land that final blow.

Those specific frames of the hand to hand combat look like they were pulled straight from the Cowboy Bebop movie, and the movement is actually way smoother than usual.

Kabuto watching from the sidelines just makes it obvious he is up to something way worse than being a failed student

The whole idea of the branch family being forced to protect the main family is so dark and it explains why Neji is so bitter
windblight_ganon's avatar

I can't believe Neji actually has to live with a seal that can literally fry his brain if he steps out of line, and the fact that his dad had to die for the main family is just messed up. It makes his whole destiny speech feel way more heavy than before, even if I want Naruto to knock some sense into him.

Neji hitting all sixty four points looked like it was the end for sure but Naruto just has way too much energy to quit now

Naruto hid underground after using a shadow clone as a decoy and that was such a clever move for a kid who usually just runs in screaming

EPISODE CONTEXT

Episode 61 sits at the heart of the Chūnin Exam tournament finals, directly continuing the Naruto vs. Neji confrontation that began in 'Byakugan vs. Shadow Clone' the previous episode. This fight is a culmination of tensions building since the preliminary rounds, where Neji's worldview and the Hyūga clan's internal struggles were first put on display. The next episode, 'A Failure's True Power,' promises to deliver the decisive conclusion and its aftermath — making this a critical middle chapter in one of early Naruto's most defining battles.
