It really got me when Shikamaru explained his plan because it showed how many steps ahead he stays in a fight

I spent the whole fight wondering how Shikamaru would get out of that flute music, and then he just breaks his own finger. It shows that he actually has a lot of guts, even if he complains about everything being a drag. The way he used those giants as a shadow extension was such a smart play to catch Tayuya off guard

The way the animation showed Shikamaru thinking through his strategy like a board game was really well done, and it made the whole fight feel much more intense

I cannot believe Shikamaru really broke his own finger just to snap out of that genjutsu and it was so brutal to watch

Tayuya acting all tough and then getting caught in that shadow trap was the best part of the whole episode

Naruto and Kimimaro just staring at each other felt so slow compared to the tactical moves Shikamaru was making against the flute girl

Watching Shikamaru treat a real life or death fight like a game of shogi is so cool and you can tell he is way smarter than everyone else in the leaf village

Shikamaru using her own summoned giants against her with that shadow possession was such a genius move and it looked great

That moment where Shikamaru revealed he was just baiting her into a trap the whole time made Tayuya look so silly for underestimating him

The fight really picked up once Tayuya brought out those weird giants, but watching Shikamaru navigate the shadows and wait for the perfect moment to strike was even better

Tayuya getting completely outplayed after she thought she had him trapped in a genjutsu was better than any other fight in this mission and it was such a relief

I was so shocked when I realized the first attack was just a distraction to set up the shadow trap and my brain just could not keep up with his logic

Everyone else is just throwing punches but Shikamaru is out here playing chess with flash bombs and kunai and it makes this whole rescue mission feel way more intense

I was honestly getting worried because Tayuya was totally dominating with those giant summons and the flute genjutsu, but seeing Shikamaru break his own finger using his shadow just to snap out of the trance was insane. I love how he basically played dead for half the fight just to lure her into that shadow possession jutsu at the very end

That moment when the shadow finally reached Tayuya after she went into her second state was so satisfying and it proves you can never count Shikamaru out of a fight

You really see the difference between a brute force fight and how Shikamaru handles things when he explained his fakeout strategy while catching Tayuya in his trap

I cannot believe he actually broke his own finger just to escape that flute music and it was such a cold move for someone who always says things are a drag

The way Shikamaru used those flash bombs to extend the shadows was so clever and it really shows why he is the best strategist in the village

It is crazy how he can turn a losing situation into a trap with just a few shadows and some quick thinking while everyone else is just using brute force

Seeing him lure her in close was perfect, especially since you forget how dangerous he is even when he looks completely exhausted and beaten down

EPISODE CONTEXT

Sitting deep in the Sasuke Retrieval Mission arc, episode 122 follows the Konoha squad splitting off into individual battles after episode 121's setup. Shikamaru's confrontation with Tayuya is one of several simultaneous fights, and this episode gives his matchup focused attention before the arc cycles through the remaining one-on-one showdowns that will determine whether the team can catch up to Sasuke.
