I think the bell test with Kakashi brought a sense of nostalgia back to the viewer.

From OG to Shippuden it shows the real growth that Naruto and Sakura have had since.

I also think the entry of the Akatsuki is very significant as now they are after powerful ninja and will impact the time line a great deal

Sasori and Deidara's upcoming way to the Sand Village is the most chilling, and Naruto and Sakura fighting Kakashi is the most nostalgic one.

Deidara and Sasori just walking up to the Sand Village gate while the guards have no idea what is coming feels so ominous and those red clouds on the cloaks are terrifying

Everyone being a higher rank than Naruto is so funny but seeing Gaara in those Kazekage robes is just wild He really went from a monster to the leader of his village and it feels so earned

I lost my mind when Naruto handed Kakashi that new Jiraiya book and seeing Kakashi shake from excitement was the funniest thing in the whole episode he is still the same old creep

Kakashi pulling his headband up to show the Sharingan right at the start of the bell test means he is not playing around with them anymore and the nostalgia is everywhere

Naruto is still a total brat and it is hilarious how he forgot Temari name while she was standing right there. Some things never change even after two years of training away

The way the episode cuts between the training in the Leaf and the betrayal in the Sand is great, especially when Yura kills those guards at the gate. Things are getting dark fast

The Akatsuki are finally here and they mean business if they are already invading a hidden village. That bird Deidara made looks creepy and the whole desert atmosphere is super tense

Deidara and Sasori look so cool in those cloaks and their entrance at the desert border was perfect. You can feel the danger the second they start talking about the mission

Gaara standing on that roof as the Kazekage is such a massive change and you can tell he really cares about the village now. The Sand is in big trouble with those Akatsuki guys arriving

I cannot believe Naruto is still a Genin while everyone else moved up so far. Even Gaara is a whole leader now and it makes me feel for Naruto even if he is being loud

Naruto giving Kakashi that new Jiraiya book is the funniest thing ever and I love how his hands were actually shaking. It is such a classic Team 7 moment to start the new series

That transition from the training ground to Yura murdering the guards was so sudden and it makes the Akatsuki threat feel like it is actually happening right now

Jiraiya and Kakashi talking about the Akatsuki really set a dark tone for this new season, especially with Itachi being mentioned as part of the group that is hunting Naruto down

You can really tell Naruto and Sakura are on a different level now that they are teaming up for the bell test rematch instead of just running around like kids

The way Deidara and Sasori are just casually chatting while they prepare to destroy the Sand Village makes them feel way more threatening than the villains we saw before

My heart sank seeing the flashbacks to the old Team 7 during the bell test and it makes the fact that Sasuke is still gone feel way more real

Kakashi pulling the same late excuse about the old lady was such a great callback and seeing the bells come out again brings back so many memories

I can't believe Gaara actually made it all the way to Kazekage in just two years while Naruto spent the whole time training and stayed a Genin, seeing him stand on that balcony in the Sand Village robes really shows how much things have changed since the original series and it makes the Akatsuki invasion feel even more dangerous now

EPISODE CONTEXT

Directly following 'Homecoming,' where Naruto returned to the Hidden Leaf Village after years of training, this episode shifts focus to evaluating how much Naruto and Sakura have actually grown by reuniting them with Kakashi for a pivotal training exercise. It serves as the connective tissue between Naruto's arrival and the payoff in episode 3, 'The Results of Training,' where the full extent of their progress becomes clear. As the second of 500 episodes, it's foundational setup—grounding the audience in familiar bonds before Shippuden's darker, more complex narrative takes hold.
