Synopsis

Lupin III, the world's greatest thief, has hit a wall: the global police network has him completely figured out, every move predicted before he makes it. Retirement starts looking real. Then his partner Jigen drops something irresistible on the table: a diamond the size of a football, supposedly hidden inside the Statue of Liberty. That's the kind of job that pulls you back in. The heist leads them to a young computer genius named Michael, a dangerous secret society called the Three Masons, and something called the Ultravirus, a program that can control every computer network on the planet. What started as a gem robbery turns into something much messier. The tone here is classic Lupin: genuinely funny, fast-moving, and stylish without taking itself too seriously. Directed by Osamu Dezaki with a jazz soundtrack from Yuji Ohno, the whole thing has this cool, breezy energy even when the stakes are high. If you've watched Cowboy Bebop and liked how it mixed action with a laid-back attitude, Lupin scratches that same itch but with more comedy baked in. Fans of City Hunter will also feel at home with the adult cast and the mix of crime capers with dry humor. As a single TV special from 1989, it's a low-commitment watch that holds up surprisingly well, especially if you want something that doesn't demand you care about twelve episodes of buildup first.
