The abandoned school setting is used so well here because the flickering lights, and those long empty hallways, really translate the original visual novel dread into the animation. It is definitely more of a mystery than anyone expects going in, especially with the way Miyuki and Kotomi try to figure out the blackmail before everything goes totally south.

My skin was crawling during that scene where they find out they are not alone in the old building and the horror elements are surprisingly strong for an old ova

It feels like the pacing is a bit slow at the start but once they realize the doors are locked the dread really starts to set in for everyone

I think the blackmail note starting the plot is so much more effective than just jumping into the weird stuff and it makes me actually care about why Kotomi is there

Empty hallways and flickering lights create such a thick atmosphere and the horror elements really take the lead once the doors are locked shut

it is weirdly more of a horror mystery than i thought it would be, and the way it builds up the suspense in that abandoned school building actually works for the most part, especially since the old animation style gives it a gritty feel that fits the dark tone and seeing everyone lose their minds as people go missing is definitely a grim start

the atmosphere in this first episode is actually great, especially when the girls realize they can't get out of the school and the panic starts to set in among the group

i wasn't expecting the mystery to be this thick and the way the girls just vanish into thin air while everyone is panicking is pretty unsettling

that threatening note kotomi found was so personal and it really sets a messed up tone for the rest of the night in that school

the setup with the old school building feels really effective for a horror story and the way the group starts falling apart immediately as they get trapped is intense

the pacing is a bit slow at first and it takes a while to get to the point but the sense of dread inside the school building is well done

the art style definitely shows its age but it works for the scary parts and the tension before anything even happens is surprisingly heavy

the vibe in that old school building is creepy and the way the lights flicker makes everything feel like a horror movie instead of just a typical adult show

i got so unsettled seeing kotomi get terrified by those notes and the dark atmosphere once they realized they were trapped in that building was actually pretty scary

miyuki being so headstrong compared to the others is such a good dynamic and the mystery about who is snatching the girls actually keeps things interesting the whole time

It is wild that this was banned in some places, but the setup with the blackmail notes and the creepy school setting really does build a lot of genuine suspense.

The horror elements in this are surprisingly strong for this genre, and the atmosphere in that abandoned school building is actually terrifying. I liked how Kotomi and Miyuki realize they are totally locked in with someone who knows all their secrets as it makes the start of the story very dark and I wanted to know if they could ever find an exit.

You can really feel the dread in those empty school hallways and the way everyone gets trapped inside so fast makes the whole thing feel totally hopeless

My skin was crawling when Kotomi found that note because that kind of blackmail is just a total nightmare

EPISODE CONTEXT

As the first of three episodes, 'Prison of Shame' carries the full weight of world-building and character establishment for the entire series. There is no prior episode to reference — everything originates here. The entrapment scenario and the disappearing classmates set the central conflict that episodes two and three will escalate and resolve.
