Synopsis

Imagine a doll-like girl sitting alone at the top of a towering library in a 1920s European boarding school, surrounded by books, solving crimes out of sheer boredom. That's Victorique de Blois, and she's the reason to watch Gosick. Kazuya Kujou is a Japanese exchange student at Saint Marguerite Academy in the fictional country of Sauville, circa 1924. His classmates call him the "Black Reaper" because of some superstition about his dark hair bringing death — so he doesn't exactly have a thriving social life. One day he wanders into the school's massive library and finds Victorique, a tiny, sharp-tongued genius who reconstructs entire crime scenes from fragments of evidence like she's assembling a puzzle only she can see. They start solving mysteries together, and the cases get darker and more personal as the series goes on, pulling in political intrigue and Victorique's own shadowy family history. The romance between them builds slowly and honestly, rooted in the fact that they're both outsiders who genuinely need each other. Studio Bones gives the whole thing a gorgeous period setting that actually feels lived-in rather than decorative. If you liked the quiet investigative rhythm of Hyouka but want higher stakes and a historical backdrop, or if The Mystic Archives of Dantalian caught your eye but left you wanting more emotional depth, Gosick threads that needle well. Twenty-four episodes, and it earns its ending.
