the structural execution of the premiere establishes an exceptionally quick paced start to the new narrative arc. unfortunately the actual mechanical animation and overarching art direction remain noticeably chopped. situating the protagonist at the specific academy connected to earlier tragedies provides necessary grounding.

hearing that specific quote about being born twice once to exist and twice to live literally gave me absolute chills. ima start quoting that. the sheer emotional depth of the writing is just so beautiful right now and it hits so hard. im so heavily invested in lara and her overarching journey already. the old school vibes is unmatched

I genuinely thought this was just going to be some generic little mermaid remake but boy was i completely wrong. the narrative is actually going in a totally different direction. and the mermaids are right, humans are actually VILE CREATURES and i can confirm that myself. will definitely be tuning in every week.

i was completely caught off guard when lara just got blasted into 2026 and hit that girl on the bridge and the whole vibe changed in a second

grace being laras aunt instead of just a random evil sea witch is such a cool change and she definitely feels like she has a lot more going on than just being mean

seeing lara choose to sacrifice her royal ring to save her family made me actually tear up a bit because her dad finally showed he cared before she vanished into the light

lara biting the head off that fish was so weird and then getting blasted into 2026 was the biggest surprise that hit me in a long time

the way the art looks like an old ghibli movie from the nineties is so pretty and i love how they did the transformation scenes with all that weird body horror stuff

The transition from the classic 1700s fairy tale setting to modern Japan was actually insane because I thought this was just going to be a standard retelling, but then she gets sent through time to 2026. The animation has this really cool retro feel that makes the undersea kingdom look amazing, and now I am just waiting to see how Mari deals with this mermaid landing on her

I did not expect the prince to be such a jerk and calling her a monster after she saved his life was cold and then she just explodes into the future and lands in a city

EPISODE CONTEXT

As the series opener of twelve episodes, this installment functions as a prologue — there is nothing before it, and everything after it depends on what Lara sets in motion here. The episode establishes the emotional and thematic foundation of the entire series, bridging a traditional fantasy world with the modern-day Japan setting that will define the bulk of the story ahead. Episode 2 is positioned to pick up directly from that tonal shift, moving the narrative into its central arc of redemption and self-discovery.
