Gate has an interesting premise with modern military vs fantasy warfare. But it really feels like propaganda at times, especially with how easily the fantasy army loses once the modern military fights back. Unfortunately, the characters aren’t that interesting so far.

Impactful introductory episode. They did a good job on compressing all the boring stuff withut making the stoy and details confusing. Itami being a otaku greatly resonates with a lot of viewers making him very relatable. The animation of the battle was very fluid and detailed.

This opener goes from chill otaku life to full-on chaos in seconds. The Ginza attack feels intense and real, and Itami’s calm leadership stands out. Military vs fantasy hits hard visually. Not flashy, but super gripping. A strong start that keeps you watching.

GATE has a unique premise. Having read plenty of modern-vs-fantasy power fantasies, I find it one of the strongest entries. However, the in-your-face jokes and propaganda might put some off, and the anime significantly tones down the violence from the source material.

An Isekai where no one dies to get to the other world! JDF forces in a fantasy world are actually trying to understand and connect with the residents. The modern vs fantasy is awesome.

An amazing first episode into the world of GATE, introducing the two worlds and giving viewers insight onto the protagonist and his backstory.

EPISODE CONTEXT

As the first of twelve episodes, this premiere exists purely to establish the central premise — the gate, the incursion, and Itami's unlikely position as a key figure — giving the season its foundational conflict. Everything here feeds directly into subsequent episodes where the JSDF crosses into the 'Special Region,' shifting the dynamic from defense to exploration and diplomacy. This is essential viewing; every character introduction and world-building beat pays off across the full season.
