Synopsis

Blocked out by permanent cloud cover, the sun isn't just absent, not metaphorically, but literally, slowly suffocating the planet. Plants are dead, oxygen is running thin, and humanity's solution is as desperate as it sounds: turn people into plants. The technology is called transfloration, and yes, it does exactly what it sounds like. You volunteer, you become a living oxygen-producing organism, and your family gets paid. That's the deal. Toshiro Kamiya is seriously considering it. His mom is sick, the bills are impossible, and there aren't a lot of other options when civilization is already on its last breath. The ONA drops you right into that weight, not as an action story, but as a quiet, suffocating drama about what people are willing to sacrifice and who gets to decide what that sacrifice is worth. If you liked the slow-burn dread of Texhnolyze or the bleak philosophical atmosphere of Ergo Proxy, this is operating in that same uncomfortable space. It's not trying to entertain you so much as sit with you in something genuinely hard to think about. The sci-fi premise is really just scaffolding for questions about ethics, desperation, and whether survival is still meaningful when it costs this much. Adapted from a seinen manga, Fool Night is the kind of story that doesn't rush to give you answers. It's heavy, intentional, and built for people who want their dystopias to actually hurt a little.
