Dreaming of a Whale

Through the quiet, half-abandoned streets of the coastal town of Namima, Kairi drifts with a dog at their side and a radio that crackles to life at the exact same time every day, a mysterious voice, reading poems, and then silence. That's already a mood. But Kairi also sees things nobody else does: enormous whales drifting through the sky, through walls, through people, not real whales, but something stranger, swimming through the unconscious minds of everyone around them. It's a gift that feels more like a haunting, and it's kept Kairi deeply alone. Then they meet Shio, an older woman who's spent years quietly mapping these dream-whales and knows the territory better than anyone, though that knowledge has cost her more than she'll easily admit. The two of them circle each other carefully, Shio offering guidance while also being a warning about what happens when you go too deep. This is a 2026 original movie, and the vibe is slow, surreal, and emotionally heavy in a way that lingers. If you liked Mushishi's lonely wanderer atmosphere or the interior psychological weight of Haibane Renmei, this will hit that same nerve. It also has a bit of Serial Experiments Lain's unsettling dreamlike dread. The animation blends traditional and digital techniques in a way that makes everything feel slightly out of time, and the sound design is doing a lot of quiet, careful work throughout.
