Synopsis

At only 12 years old, Takumi Harada is already hailed as a prodigious baseball pitcher. But when his family moves to the backwater town of Nitta, Takumi has no choice but to join his new school's unskilled baseball team. This development has little effect on the boy, as he believes it is more interesting if this no-name club becomes a powerhouse due to his presence. However, due to his overwhelming talent, Takumi is in need of a catcher able to keep up with his pitches. His worries are soon put to rest after meeting Gou Nagakura. As his fan and fellow student, Gou is eager to prove that he is not a simple braggart, but rather a player skillful enough to catch Takumi's pitches. Amid struggling to form a battery with Gou, Takumi comes into conflict with his new teammates due to his irreverent personality but grapples to find the true joy of the sport under his grandfather's guidance. Let me be clear first. While the story is very well written, this series isn't really about baseball, but rather friendship and rivalry. I don't really have a problem with that either, but when I watch a sports anime, I'm looking for hype and excitement. Now, getting into the story, it's actually great. If you're really into melodrama, you'll probably enjoy this a lot. That said, personally, I didn't really like this show that much. It just feels way too bland for me since I was expecting something much more energetic. The characters, especially the main character, are pretty mediocre in my opinion. To be honest, I don't really like Takumi at all. He's just way too stoic and arrogant without much reason. I'd probably like him more if there was enough context as to why he's like that, but there simply isn't. The pacing also wasn't to my liking. What disappointed me the most was how the ending played out. I just feel like all that tension and emotional build-up ended up going nowhere. Craftsmanship-wise, it's definitely great. The visuals are nice, and the animation is also pretty good. The direction is great too. It really makes the emotional scenes hit harder. Overall, I'd rate this series a 5/10. While I think the story is good, it's just not my cup of tea.
